River Oaks Community Centre Holds North Oakville's October Calendar While Trafalgar Stays Under Construction

Three Saturdays and Sundays in October 2026 lead to the same parking lot at 2400 Sixth Line. A charity race on October 3 takes over the trail from the regular Saturday parkrun. The centre's first rink is set to return on October 12. A first-year fundraising walk for the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton arrives on October 18. Meanwhile, the usual errand corridor at Trafalgar Road and Dundas Street East is still squeezed by Halton Region's road widening, and that work runs through November.

So for most of this month, River Oaks Community Centre and the trails around it are the busiest public address in the neighborhood, and the plaza run is a detour. Here is how the month plays out, in order.

October 3: The Trail Changes Hands for a Morning

Most Saturdays at 9:00 a.m., River Oaks parkrun runs a free, timed 5K that starts and finishes at the community centre. The course is two laps on the paved and limestone paths of the Cross Town Trail, inside the block framed by Sixth Line, McDowell Avenue and River Glen Boulevard. The event marked its eighth birthday on June 20, 2026. The organizers' report on a Canada Day special run said 190 people walked, jogged or ran, which set a new attendance record.

On October 3, parkrun's site lists the event as cancelled because the venue is unavailable. One hour later, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, the same River Oaks Park Trail hosts Run to Rise, organized by the Wings for Limbs Foundation, with a 5K walk/run and a 2.6K accessible route. The program also includes a group warm-up and a food truck after the finish.

This is the race's second year. The organizer says it raises awareness and money for people living with limb loss, with proceeds going toward prosthetic care, mobility solutions and other essential supports for amputees. Pricing for 2026:

  • Adults 13 and over: $40, with a shirt, wristband and finisher medal
  • Children 6 to 12: $30, with the same shirt, wristband and medal
  • Ages 0 to 5: free, without a shirt or medal

BurlingtonToday reported on September 30, 2026, that 60 percent of 5K registration fees will go to ParaSport Ontario's Play to Podium Fund. The 2025 race raised $9,560 for that fund. That paid for a hand cycle and an adapted spin bike for two athletes. That figure gives the first year a concrete result: two pieces of equipment for two named beneficiaries, paid for by one morning on a trail loop in River Oaks.

For a parkrun regular, the change is mostly about timing and cost. The free 9:00 a.m. run is off that day. The paid 10:00 a.m. event uses the same paths, and the 2.6K accessible route makes the morning open to people who would not usually line up for a 5K.

October 12: The Ice Comes Back

The second date matters more for daily life than any single event. The Town of Oakville's facility booking portal says River Oaks Community Centre Rink A is "targeted to reopen October 12 following capital improvements and renovations." October 12, 2026, is Thanksgiving Monday.

The Town calls the date a target, not a promise. Anyone planning a skate, booking last-minute ice or waiting on a team schedule should check the portal before that weekend. The same portal lets residents book last-minute ice or gyms up to seven days ahead. That means the first public bookings for the renovated rink, if the date holds, would open in the first week of October.

The building also stays busy indoors before the rink returns. The Town's drop-in schedule lists a basketball drop-in in Community Room A on Friday, October 2, from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. The River Oaks Mature Adults Club's fall/winter newsletter lists a Thursday-morning "Historical Discussion with Susan" at the centre. Drop-in listings change week to week, so the portal is the place to confirm them.

October 18: A New Walk Picks This Address

Six days after the rink's target date, the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton holds its first Wiggle Waggle Walk at River Oaks Community Centre on Sunday, October 18, starting at 10:00 a.m. The organizer announces it this way:

"Introducing the Humane Society of Oakville, Milton & Halton's Wiggle Waggle Walk."

The format is loose on purpose. The page invites people to "walk, run, bike, stroll" or simply come for the day. Registration is paired with personal fundraising pages, and teams can be made up of family, friends, neighbours or coworkers, with rewards unlocked at fundraising milestones. According to the organizer, the money supports animal care and second chances, reuniting lost pets with their families, the Pet Food Bank, and humane education and youth programs.

The public page does not list an entry fee, a mapped route, a vendor lineup or a schedule of dog activities. Anyone weighing the walk against a regular Sunday routine will need to register to see the details. It also says supporters can "support the cause from wherever you are," so the event works for people who can't make the morning.

Taken together, the two weekend events say something about the site. A regional animal charity with three municipalities in its name picked River Oaks Community Centre for a first-year event, and a limb-loss foundation brought its second race back to the same trail. The open loop of the Cross Town Trail, with parking and a building at the start line, is the kind of setup an event organizer needs.

Meanwhile, at Trafalgar and Dundas

The pull toward Sixth Line is clearer when you look at what is happening a short drive west. Halton Region's Trafalgar Road improvements have shifted all traffic between Hays Boulevard and Dundas Street East to the west side of the road, with two lanes open each way. These restrictions have been in place since December 2025 and are scheduled to run through November 2026:

  • Plaza entrance: the Trafalgar Road entrance to the plaza at 330–400 Dundas Street East is closed. Businesses stay open and can be reached from Dundas Street East or Postridge Drive.
  • Sidewalk: the east-side sidewalk on Trafalgar between Hays and Dundas is closed. Pedestrians use a temporary walkway on the west side.
  • Trail access: the Morrison Valley North Trail entrance at Trafalgar Road is closed, with signs posted.

October adds overnight work. Halton's September 29, 2026, notice schedules night shifts from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. on weekdays. The first block falls in the week of September 28 or the week of October 5, and the second in the week of October 12 or the week of October 19. The listed work includes lane shifts and restrictions, hydrant replacement and line painting. If the second block lands in the week of October 12, it falls in the same week as the rink's target reopening. Weekday evening trips back from Trafalgar during those weeks may run into lane restrictions that daytime trips did not.

For anyone who uses the Morrison Valley North Trail entrance at Trafalgar for a weekend walk, the community centre's loop is the nearest fully open option this month. It is also the one that hosts the organized events.

What Arrives After the Barriers Come Down

The same corridor has one confirmed future addition. On August 17, 2026, Oakville News reported that Shake Shack chose north Oakville for its next Canadian location, at 275 Hays Boulevard in the plaza southwest of Dundas Street and Trafalgar Road. No opening date was announced. Hays Boulevard is one end of the Trafalgar segment under construction, so the restaurant will open on a stretch of road that should look different once the widening finishes.

Until then, October in River Oaks runs on a short list of dates at one address:

  1. Friday, October 2: basketball drop-in, Community Room A, 4:00 to 5:30 p.m.
  2. Saturday, October 3: no parkrun. Run to Rise from 10:00 a.m. to noon on the River Oaks Park Trail.
  3. Monday, October 12: Rink A's targeted reopening after renovations.
  4. Sunday, October 18: the first Wiggle Waggle Walk, 10:00 a.m., River Oaks Community Centre.
  5. Through November: the Trafalgar entrance to 330–400 Dundas Street East stays closed. Use Dundas Street East or Postridge Drive.

The parkrun is scheduled to return to its 9:00 a.m. Saturday start the following week. Its organizers ask first-timers to register once and bring a scannable barcode, because without one there is no recorded time.

Knowing which weekend the trail is booked, when the ice comes back and which entrance gets you into the plaza is the kind of detail The Pace Team follows across north Oakville.
